Jan. 1st, 2020 04:25 pmFirst make of 2020 is a bra. Which also ticks one off my Make Nine.

In my previous post I had a toile of the Marlborough bra by Orange Lingerie is size 30H that looked a good shape based on my RTW bras and the band was a good shape but I couldn’t try it properly because I didn’t have a fitting underwire. Since then two of my ready to wear bras have given up the ghost providing me with two fitting underwire sets and a increased need for new bras.

2020 Make Nine

Make Nine is a way of planing your sewing for the year. It can be as prescriptive as you want or it can be a very general I need these garments. The point is to plan your sewing so you have a useable wardrobe. I did this last year and found it really helpful, some of the items on here are repeats because I either didn’t attempt them last year or didn’t succeed. While I have photos of specific patterns these often refer to the garment type rather than that pattern.
I have tried to arrange them in order of importance or need.

Adventures in Shirtmaking - Part 3
Dec. 29th, 2019 12:05 pmThis is post will be a round up, From continuing failure to success.
In my last post I was still working with the Burda shirt. I was and continue to be quite pleased with the pyjamas but my attempt at making a day shirt out of the pattern was completely unsuccessful, so unsuccessful its never been worn and is now in my mum’s fabric stash, so I moved on to another pattern.

Dec. 29th, 2019 12:00 pmI posted a Make Nine in January and have got a surprising way through it.
1. Angel Wing Jeans - I made these but they don’t go all the way up and I’m on strike about fitting clothing, especially bottoms, to my current size when it requires tracing off. I weaned of Prednisolone this year and haven’t lost all the weight I gained while on. I was working my way into them but then my ability to be active plummeted and ...
2. Smart Coat - this is similarly on the back burner. I’ve lost enough weight that the coat pattern I had been planning on making, and the coat I tested the pattern with, no longer fits and tracing and altering a new pattern wasn’t at the top of my list.
3. Shirts - while I’ve not been good about blogging this I have made significant progress with this. The first pattern I tried on the second attempt made a wearable pyjama shirt but the third attempt proved I wasn’t going to get a wearable outside shirt from it. My second pattern, the Sedona shirt by designer stitch was still unwearable on the fourth attempt. I switched successfully to two Ottobre kids patterns which I need to write up.
4. Jacket - The pattern I had been thinking about using was an adult Burma pattern and I struggle to get adult patterns narrow enough to first my back and shoulders so I had resigned myself to having to draft a jacket which didn’t appeal. I have since found a pattern that might work for a proper smart jacket but I haven’t got around to tracing it. In the interim I have made a more casual 3 season jacket from another pattern.
5. Matching skirt - As I haven’t cut in to the wool jacket fabric yet I haven’t looked at making a matching skirt.
6. Skirt to match the shirt - During a fabric swap and wardrobe sort out it became clear that the fabric intended to make a faux dress wouldn’t fit in my wardrobe so this plan has been shelved.
7. Smart Trousers - Again I’ve been changing shape while coming off of steroids and have not wanted to make any smart trousers.
8 and 9.Smart Jumper 1 & 2 - While not smart, I have meet my needs for new jumpers. I used two different patterns from Ottobre, Gray Uniform and Sporting Goodies. I prefer the classic hoody look of the Gray Uniform hoody but the Sporting Goodies is a better bodice shape on me.

8 and 9.

I got some lovely cotton sweatshirting in a print called Little Witch for Christmas from my mum and managed to convince her to let me have it early. While the pattern is called Little Witches I fell in love with the cats riding broomsticks and knew I wanted to make a snuggly hoody out of it. ( Read more... )
The Marlborough Bra
This was a far more pleasant experience from start to finish.
Like the Shelley bra, the Marlborough bra is a full coverage, underwired bra with a full band whose smallest band is a 30. Unlike the Shelley bra this bra is an easily obtained pdf and should be made with lace cup details.

My ready to wear bra size is a 28GG in UK sizing (60GG EU, 75GG FR or 6GG AUS) which means RTW bras are expensive, difficult to find and generally assume I paid for these and want to display them not that they’re an unfortunate result of genetics. As a result I’ve been interested in learning how to make bras.
To that end I bought and toiled two bra patterns earlier this year, the Shelley bra by Pin-Up Girls and the Marlborough bra by Orange Lingerie.

The Shelley bra is a full coverage underwired bra with a full band. The pattern designer strongly recommends you buy her Bluprint course with the bra pattern.

Red Cord Jacket
Dec. 15th, 2019 10:21 amAs part of my Make Nine plans I posted my need for new smart jackets and a smart winter coat. That became slightly more urgent when this winter rolled around and my casual winter coat no longer fitted.

As a coat it wasn't successful. I mucked up the FBA somewhere and it is supposed to be a double breasted jacket but it doesn’t and never will close across the bust which is being hidden by the single line of buttons rather than a double line. However the fit across the back and shoulders, is as ever with 158 girls Ottobre kids patterns on me, amazing and it goes brilliantly with my wardrobe as seen in the flat lays below.

I said I needed to make jumpers in my 2019 Make Nine and threw a photo of the Gray Uniform Hoodie from Ottobre Design Magazine Kids 6/2018 as a placeholder pattern. Inspired by both getting soaked when the laundry needed doing and the Great British Sewing Bee Sewalong Sustainability Week, I decided to try it out with two jumpers that I wasn't wearing.

Feb. 19th, 2019 06:29 pmMark 2 - Paisley brushed cotton pyjamas
Mark 1 left me with a pretty pair of pyjamas that are both too lightweight for me to ever wear and too big across the chest but mum was gifted with 4m of paisley print brushed cotton which she generously let me make into pyjamas.( Read more... )

Adventures in Shirt Making - Part 1
Jan. 31st, 2019 10:29 amIntroduction
As I said in my 2019 Make Nine plans post, for various reasons my wardrobe currently only contains one shirt. I'm very busty and short with a narrow back and shoulders which makes buying shirts interesting but I can sew. So I am looking to join my mother in the adventures of shirt making.

2019 Make Nine
Jan. 7th, 2019 06:43 pmSo I probably ought to use this journal for more than just exchange letters, especially as I logged out of my tumblr for the protest and just forgot to go back. In the interests of doing so this a repost from my Pillowfort with my personal garment sewing plans for 2019 in the form of a Make Nine with lots of waffle. It isn't a complete list, I was given the material to make my first quilt for Christmas and am planning on making at least one bag as presents.
Make Nine is a challenge started by Rochelle of Home Row Fiber Co. It seems like a good way of making myself make the things I need but don't want to make and stop myself from making things I don't need.

My list is going to be pattern light because some of the clothes I liked most and wore most last year were self-drafted and I have had very little luck in making patterns fit me.

Now to get over the lurgy and actually be well enough to trace patterns off, preferably before one pair of jeans dies and I end up making jeans in my pajamas in half a day so I can put trousers on again.
Update: I've traced the jeans pattern but due to continuing lurgy it is sitting in an envelope being ignored. I really need to get around to doing that. The trousers I'm wearing could get up and walk away but I have an awful feeling the other pair are going to disintegrate if I try putting them on. George at ASDA jeans do not survive nearly a year of wear well.
